From all Toraja ceremonies the most important are those related to sending a dead person to the afterlife world, because according to the local belief, without proper funeral rites the spirit of the decease will cause misfortune to its family. Their other belief like "you can take it with you when you are death" has led the dead in Toraja well equipped, and since then they started to hide their dead in the caves. This strange culture has attracted a large number of visitors visiting this orchid-shaped island of Sulawesi, in particular the highland Tana Toraja district. The trip brings you visiting various graves from the cliff side graves, hanging graves, and even the baby grave embedded in the living tree. These are not the only things that make Toraja so interesting, the landscape is strikingly beautiful and the Toraja traditional houses are as well mythologically and philosophically interesting.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, MAKASSAR –TORAJA LAND
Arrives at Hasanuddin airport of Makassar, greet and transfer to Toraja, about 8-9 hours drive through magnificent landscape and villages of the native Bugis people with their typical houses on stilts. Stops en-route for enjoying the panoramic views and have a peek into the native house. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Late afternoon arrive in Rantepao, is the centre of Tana Toraja regency, your base for touring Toraja distinctive culture. Toraja is situated in the highland about 800 meter from the sea surface, so the weather is pleasantly cool. Overnight at hotel in Toraja with dinner. (L, D)
Day 2-3, TORAJA LAND
These two days are for exploring Torajan various gravesites; cliff graves, hanging graves, tree graves and mausoleums. Also hike to the villages to see Torajan traditional houses, traditional weaving, and the local in their daily activities. Toraja is famous for their funeral ceremonies which often involving thousands of people and hundreds of animal sacrifice over couple of days ceremony period. The tour will be flexible if the guide is able to locate funeral ceremony taking place during your visit. (B, L, D)
Day 4 TORAJA LAND/ MAKASSAR
Drive back to Makassar with stop enroute in Bantimurung to see the waterfall and butterfly breeding center. Arrives Makassar in late afternoon, transfer to hotel or the airport for your onward flight (B, L)

Note: Toraja Land is situated in the highland with more rain possibilities, therefore the favourable time touring the area would be during dry season, April – October.
